would gather together and pay each other a visit on a w

    Is this sentence OK?

In the past extended families would gather together and pay each other a visit on a weekly basis.

You need a comma after "past". "Would" is OK but the rest is illogical. Did they gather together or did they visit each other? If they are all together (suggested by "gather together") they can't pay each other a visit as well.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

You are right Emsr2d2. I was wrong. I fixed it in these ways. Don't you think that it will be better if I move "weekly basis" after "gather together"?

In the past, extended families would gather together so that they could pay each other a visit on a weekly basis.

    Or

In the past, extended families would gather together to pay each other a visit on a weekly basis.

It's simpler and more natural to say every week.

To simplify it, you could just say "In the past, extended families would get together once a week".
