Since then, my mother and I have had to rely on each other.

Although our family was not wealthy, we lived comfortable and happy lives. However, these good times did not last as my father passed away unexpectedly from a viral infection. This change hit us badly as we lost our important pillar of support. We were distraught and devastated beyond words. Since then, my mother and I have had to rely on each other.

The above is from a Buddhist magazine.

Should it be 'have' instead of 'have had'?

    Thanks.

No. "Have had" is better with "since".

Is "have had" better or the only correct tense with "since"?
I am not a teacher or a native speaker.

I would say that is the only tense that is correct. With "since", it is typical to use the present perfect.
