When a shark appeared close to the beach

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

When a shark appeared close to the beach, panic broke out. Bathers ran out of the water, women screamed, and parents grabbed their children and carried them away from the beach. Later, it showed that the supposed shark was actually a prank played by some teenagers.

Did you happen to take the idea from "Jaws"?

    andrewg927,

No. I didn't think about "Jaws." Sometimes I read in papers about sharks appearing close the beach and then people started panicking. This sentence was the first that came up in my mind at 5.30 in the morning when I woke up, and I decided to post it before I forgot it.

I asked because what you described is so similar to a scene in "Jaws".

I never saw the whole film. I had seen just a scene or two, but that was so many years ago that I do not remember much of it.

    See above.

Could I write instead like this:

It turned out that the supposed shark was actually a prank...

Or "It turned out that the "shark" was just a teenager with a fake dorsal fin on his back".
