    His parents asked David

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

His parents asked little David what he wanted to be when he grew up. He replied promptly he wanted to be an investment banker because he would be able to buy more expensive toys.

    Re: His parents asked David

Is "that" compulsory in the above sentence, or is the sentence correct without it?

    It's highly desirable.
