    like an emerald

    1) The island, like an emerald, sat in the middle of the silvery waters.
    instead of
The island, which was like an emerald, sat in the middle of the silvery waters.

    2) His hand, like a hammer, landed on my face.

    3) His hand like a hammer landed on my face.
    instead of:
His hand landed on my face like a hammer.

I think '3' would be poetic or something. To me, it doesn't seem correct in today's English, unless it is used for effect. But if I was sure, I wouldn't be asking this question!

    Gratefully,
    Navi.

    Re: like an emerald

    1. It sounds wrong. How about, "The island lay in the middle of the silvery waters like an emerald."

Only the unnumbered sentence works well for the next question.

    Re: like an emerald

I'd probably put the analogy closer to the island - "The island lay like an emerald in the middle of the silvery waters".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

    Re: like an emerald

I think Raymott's version is clearer.
