    the verb "effect"

I read the dictionary definiton of the verb "effect" but I'm still not sure why it was used in this sentence.

Glands are so complex and are effected by so many different things that it would be very difficult to simply list what is harmful and what is beneficial to them.

No wonder it felt so weird! This was in my English textbook. I should tell them to fix it. :)

You should! Email the publisher! You never know, the next time they reprint the book, they might fix the error.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

I asked the publisher about this and they told me that this isn't an error, as they took the text directly from a paper or something.
Please fix me if I make any grammatical mistakes! Thank you!
