    need not have v. don't need to have

    Are the phrases "need not have" and "don't need to have" identical in meaning?

    Example: You don't need to have money in a deserted island.
    You need not to have money in a deserted island.

    See above. In your opening sentence, you correctly used "need not have" but when you put it in a sentence, you added "to", making it wrong.

    You don't need to have money on a desert island.
    You need not have money on a desert island.

    Note that, in BrE at least, it's usually a "desert island" although there is nothing grammatically wrong with a "deserted island". We even have a radio programme called "Desert Island Discs" where celebrities tell the presenter what 6 records (CDs for those here under 30) they would want with them if they were stranded on a desert island.
