Maria remembered when she was a child

I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Maria remembered when she was a child how her father took her often to a funfair to ride a pony.

'... took her often ...' '...often took her...'

That would be better, but it would require that "when she was a child" be offset with commas. It would become a parenthetical clause, if I'm using the right terminology.
    I am not a teacher.
