    rise to power

I don't get the following sentence from my textbook. Please have a look.

After the Nazis rise to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.

If this sentence is correct I don't understand its grammar.

"After the Nazis rise to power", the verb rise is present tense, but all the event took place long ago. So to my mind this has to be false.

That is why I would change "rise" to "rose" and use past tense.
So would be the following sentence be correct?
After the Nazis rose to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.

    Re: rise to power

An apostrophe is missing – either in your textbook, or more likely, your transcription.

All should become clear if you consider rise as a noun, and Nazis as Nazis'.

"After the Nazis' rise to power ..."

    Re: rise to power

Okay let me summarize all this a bit.

After the Nazis' rise to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies. (correct)
That means you would translate "rise to power" into "Machtübernahme" in German.
After the Nazis' rose to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies. (false sentence)

But if you change "rise" to "come" you will have to write it this way.
After the Nazis' came to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.
    past tense

That means you will have to translate "came to power" into "an die Macht kamen" in German.

    Without the apostrophe, of course.

    Re: rise to power

I'm obviously quite slow on the uptake here.

So please, just mark the sentence which is wrong. I need to know this for sure. Thanks.

    1. After the Nazis rise to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.
    2. After the Nazis rose to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.
    3. After the Nazis came to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.

    Re: rise to power

Is it only the apostrophe? Is the sentence now correct?
    1. After the Nazis' rise to power, the persecution of the Jews was implemented through organized and brutally efficient policies.

Yes. Sentences 2 and 3 in post #3 were incorrect because of the apostrophe after Nazi.

    Re: rise to power

Sentence 1 could also be corrected by changing was to is in the second clause. It would then be in the historical present, which is sometimes used in written narratives.

I'm still curious to know whether the textbook had an apostrophe after Nazis or you missed it out when you transcribed it.
