but rather in defiance of it

I asked the question below in a forum but I haven't recieved the answer yet. So I would like to ask it again here.

I am reading the article "Complicated simplicity" from the wordpress post. Could anyone explain the meaning of the bold phrase and the next sentence in the excerpt below.

"We often know what we love, but we find it difficult to rationalise why we love it. We usually defend our feeling by saying that LOVE doesn’t take off because of a reason, but rather in defiance of it. And this is where I come in and ruin the magic (I actually don’t).

In my previous post, I asked readers to say which of the five autumn landscapes painted by Russia’s best artists resonated with them most.

Love doesn't need a logical basis, and often seems to go against logic.

Re: but rather in defiance of it

So what is the meaning of "it" and "but rather in defiance of it" here?
My dictionary says that "in defiance of" is "in spite of" but I also couldn't get the meaning.
