Hello!

Searching the internet I came across the following definition: "[h=2]As nouns the difference between specialty and specialization[/h] is that specialty is that in which one specializes; a chosen expertise or talent while specialization is the process of specializing. "

I also came across this sentence:"
Brian is a linguist whose specialization is phonology".

According to the definition above, shouldn't we say "....whose specialty is phonology"?

There is overlap between those two, and in that example, either can work.

However, e.g.,

You'll have to try the ice cream here. It's a local specialty. [Here, "specialization" would be wrong.]

The specialization of labour is key to economic development. [Here, "specialty" would be wrong.]
