    leading men---- play the part

    I not undretand the bold part, please tell me.
    From the studio's roster of leading men, Robert Walker was an obvious choice to play the part.

    In the film industry, a leading man is a male star. The feminine equivalent is a leading lady. I think these terms are no longer used very much.

    '... play the part' can only mean 'take the role of a character previously mentioned'.
