correct usage of "if" and "whether"

Do I have to use "whether" or "if" in my sentences?
I'd really like to know if this is actually correct.
I'd really like to know whether this is actually correct.

Re: correct usage of "if" and "whether"

There are some old pedantic people who try to keep "if" and "whether" separate.

If your teacher is one of them and insists only one of them is correct, see if you can put "or not" in a sentence. If you can, use "whether."

I'd really like to know if or not this is actually correct. - No
I'd really like to know whether or not this is actually correct - Yes -- So in this case, use "whether" (if it is really is important to the person reading your writing).

99% of speakers will find no problem with either sentence. Maybe 99.5%
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
