In Shanghai, Rents are high and apartments are tiny,

In Shanghai, rents are high and apartments tiny, so most residents prefer to hang out outside.

Is the second sentence correct too? I want to use the structure "so ... that". I am not sure the following is OK, though.

In Shanghai, rents are so high and apartments so tiny that most residents prefer to hang out outside.

Re: In Shanghai, Rents are high and apartments are tiny,

    Why have you capitalised "rents"?
Note that "hangout" is a noun. The verb is "hang out". The verb doesn't mean the same as "live".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

You might want to make a habit of reviewing your sentences for capitalization errors before posting them.

So, do you know why the author chose "hang out"?
I suppose, maybe because the apartments are so tiny, they want to spend most hours outside of their homes.

Re: In Shanghai, Rents are high and apartments are tiny,

Why didn't you give us the source in post #1? I assumed you had written the sentences yourself.

Using "hang out" makes sense in connection with the fact that apartments are tiny - people don't want to spend their free time cramped into a small space so they "hang out" outside instead. However, it makes no sense in connection with the fact that rents are high. How much you pay in rent has no bearing on whether you choose to spend your time inside or outside your apartment.

"In Shanghai, apartments are tiny so most residents prefer to hang out outside" makes sense.
