    move up a gear

    Hello,

"The government moves up a gear when it comes to the economy."

This is how pro-government media perceive increases in taxes. Does move up a gear fit here?

"Moving up a gear" would be to go faster. I'm not sure how that applies to government economic policies.

Theories on economics vary, of course, but I would describe tax increases as "throwing the brakes" on the economy.

Pro-government media can assert such a thing.
