Since Bob's wife had been taken

I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

Since Bob's wife had been taken to hospital with heart problems two days before, he hadn't got a wink of sleep.

In American English we would say Ever since. Without "ever", the reader doesn't know whether the speaker means "because" or "in the interval after". And of course, we'd say he hadn't gotten any sleep.
