    It would have indicated...

I cannot find anywhere how to describe this use of "would + have + past participle."

i don't want the grammatical name but how it is functioning.

I think it is certainty in the past, but my grammar book leaves blank the use of will as 100% certainty in the column it has for "the past."

    Please advise. Thank you.

Okay. I'll work it out on my own. Thanks all the same.

That's the second of your threads in which you've posted that. Just remember that in order to get useful help from us, you need to give complete sentences and context for the words or phrases you are querying. For example, post #3 could have said:

John: I can see a line on that letter that seems to say 39, then something unreadable, then an S and a T. What do you think that would have meant/indicated?
Jane. I think it would have indicated his address. It probably said something like "39 Hill St". "St" is a short form of "street".

Perhaps you could show us exactly what it says in the grammar book you mentioned in post #1.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
