    NOT A TEACHER

    Hello, Mike:

This is very old (and boring) advice, but it is true: If you want to write better, it is necessary to read, read, and read.

Here is a personal experience to share with you.

A few days ago, I read a sentence something like this: "Five teachers there are, but only one speaks German."

I thought to myself: Wow! What an unusual ring (sound) that sentence has!

I had always assumed that it was necessary to put those words in this order: "There are five teachers, but only one speaks German."

I was reminded that sometimes for the sake of variety, it is fine to use unusual word order.

Thanks, TheParser. It is a helpful tip.
Do you think that if we memorize sentences we find interesting will be beneficial for improving our writing?

Re: How to improve writing skills

I would try to memorize usages rather than sentences.
    I am not a teacher.

Re: How to improve writing skills

Memorising a sentence can help you learn vocabulary. When you find a new word, look it up and then memorise a sentence that actually means something to you. For example, if the word "brown" were a new word and your mother's hair is that colour, you could memorise "My mother's hair is brown". That way, you'll know exactly what colour "brown" is when you think of the sentence because you would think of your mother's hair.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
