Little Anna was blowing dandelion clocks

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

Little Anna was blowing dandelion clocks in a field when a black Mercedes stopped with a screech in a nearby road. A man and a woman got out and sprinted towards her. As she saw them, she ran as fast as her little body could carry her.

    Also:

    When she saw them

and American English uses "toward" instead of "towards", as a rule.

Dandelion clocks is a nice image, and instantly comprehensible, but I've never heard it. I'm not sure we have a term for dandelion seedheads -- or what you do to them, for that matter -- in American English.

It only faintly rang my bell, too, but the American Heritage Dictionary lists it without comment. Words— use them or lose them.
