Thumbs down - sometimes yes, sometimes no

    In the followwing sentences:
    black Russian boots
    black leather belts

"black Russian" are adjectives. "black leather" are adjectives too. Right?
    But:
    narrow-minded teachers
    dark-haired women

"narrow" and "minded" are adjectives "dark" and "haired" are adjectives too.Right?

So, why in the two first examples don't we use the hyphen "-" and why do we use it in the two last??

Re: - sometimes yes, sometimes no

Narrow-minded and dark-haired are phrases and have particular meanings, whereas there is no phrase such as "black Russian" or "black leather". In these sentences black is an adjective modifying the "boots" and "belts", not "Russian" or "leather".

I hope this explanation helps. :)

    In your sentences:

The boots are black, and they are also Russian.
The belts are black, and they are also leather.

However, the teachers are not narrow; their minds are narrow. The women are not dark (at least as far as we know); their hair is dark.

It is exactly as you say. It is the reason why they are written with hyphen.
