When a famous preacher arrived in the town

I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

When a famous preacher arrived in the town, he was welcomed as a rock star. People cheered at him, and everyone wanted to touch him and shake hands, but his attention seemed to be directed at the young, beautiful women whom he kissed and hugged longer than others

Unless the preacher was also a rock star, use like, not as.

They cheered or they cheered him, but they didn't cheer at him.

The end is ambiguous. Did he kiss and hug those women longer than he kissed and hugged other women he met, or did he kiss and hug those women longer than other people kissed and hugged those women?

I meant to say that he kissed and hugged those women longer than he kissed and hugged other women he met.

It's hard to clear up that ambiguity without that full explanation but you could get around the issue by saying what I was (and probably other people were) thinking.

... his attention was directed towards the beautiful young women in the crowd, who he inappropriately/alarmingly/revoltingly kissed and hugged [for a worryingly long time].
