"While lab manager of the School of Engineering, I was a~" Is the phrase correct?

An editor revised my writing from "During my service as a lab manager of the School of Engineering, I was..." into "while lab manager of the School of Engineering, I was...". Is this grammatically correct?

Your sentence implies that you were one of at least two managers. The editor's revision says you were the sole manager.

They are both grammatical, but we don't know which is correct.
