    Expression of surprise

    Hello

Our little cat Robin has been suffering from liver failure for a few years now. He rarely eats food that is prescribed for him. That is why we were very surprised to find him eating it straight from the bucket this morning.

How could I express it properly in English?

It came as a surprise to me to see our cat eating straight from the bucket this morning.

I was dumbfounded to see our cat eating straight from the bucket this morning.

I was astounded to see our cat eating straight from the bucket this morning.

I was astonished to see our cat eating straight from the bucket this morning.

    What is your opinion?

    Thank you

I'd write we were very surprised, as you did in your explanation.

The poor animal rarely eats the food that was prescribed.

They're all possible. Astonished works for me; the other two are less likely to occur in spoken American English but they aren't impossible.
