    Question difficult sentence

Here is a sentence whose grammar is not quite clear to me. Please help.
This book was lacking its front cover, the back held on by strips of pasted paper, NOW TURNED GOLDEN, in several layers, AND THE PAGES STAINED. FLECKED, AND TATTERED AROUND THE EDGES.
    1. What NOW TURNEE GOLDEN? the back or strips of pasted paper?
    2. Is "turned" a transitive verb or intransitive verb? It seems it can only be intransitive used like this?
3.And the verbs stained, flecked and tattered, are they transitive or intransitive verbs?
    4. What is the key structure of the sentence? Is it:
    a. THis book was lacking its front cover, the back held....and the pages stained.... OR
    b. This book was lacking its front cover...and the pages stained....

    Re: difficult sentence

1 The strips, I think, but it is not entirely clear.
2 It can be transitive and intransitive.
3 The pages are stained... (these are notes so some words are omitted)
4 It's condensed and not a normal setence- it's the kind of description used in antiquarian bookshops. I'd say it's a list, so it's hard to say which is the key.
