1. "Sorry my hands are dirty. I have been working in the garden."

2. "Sorry my hands are dirty. I was working in the garden."

I always get confused between Present Perfect Continuous and Past Continuous. Can someone please help me with this?
Also, which of the above sentences is correct to use in the given context?
