It was during one summer break at a rural hospital in Nakhon Nayok Province, Thailand when 10-year-old May and her mother entered my dental operating room. The young girl had a toothache. Her mother was convinced that extracting the infected tooth was the ideal solution. As an advocate of saving teeth rather than removing them, I suggested endodontics treatment as an alternative. At first, she had insisted against the option; however, after some persuasion, she later changed her mind. After the treatment was completed, little May, with all her teeth intact, gave me a beautiful smile; a gesture that have stuck with me ever since. This is one of the many fond memory I have had working as a dentist over the years.

The positive experience that I have had as a dentist have assured me that this is the right field of work for me. With a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Srinakharinwirot University’s (SWU) dental school and four years of experience as a general practice dentist, I am now confident that I possess ample skills, knowledge, and experience to start progressing towards becoming a dental specialist. Specifically, I want to pursue a career as an endodontist.

I began to develop an interest in endodontics back when I was an undergrad at SWU. I was fortunate to be given an opportunity to observe and assist a postgraduate student with several endodontics cases. One of those cases happened to be my father, who at the time had a severe tooth pain. Having saw how effective the treatment worked on him and having heard the praises he gave my senior, I wanted to be able to perform such treatment as well.

My years at SWU was a challenging yet rewarding journey. Under the guidance of many knowledgeable and highly-experienced professors, I developed myself into a competent dentist through a variety of theoretical and practical training. One of the highlights of my coursework was successfully conducting a internal bleaching procedure after a root canal treatment on a patient diagnosed with discoloration of a permanent tooth due to trauma. It was quite a rare case for an undergrad to encounter, and I was glad that I capitalize on the opportunity.

Besides academic work, I also took part in various extra-curricular activities. I was a part of a student council that ran several successful community projects. These include the “Sweet Enough Canteen” project, encouraging children to reduce consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks at cafeterias, and the “No No No Smoking Rabbit” project, encouraging teens to stop smoking. On several occasions, I have volunteered to help with the dental school’s open house programs as well, where I gave inspirational speeches to young students and helped conduct various introductory activities. In addition, I was a part of the dental school’s cheerleader squad, in which I learn to become a confident and vocal figure to my fellow students.

During my senior year, I also had an opportunity to collaborate with the Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine in an inter-university research programme. My team and I researched the topic of “Infective Endocarditis in Relation to Odontogenic Infection”. At that time, we got to learn from a number of cardiologists and endodontists, as well as observe them performed infective endocarditis treatments. This experience has significantly improved my research skills, expand my network, and inspired me to become a researcher.

My first job after graduation was as a general practice dentist at the Nakhon Nayok Provincial Hospital. During this period, I have gained a lot of experience from treating a wide range of patients and interacting other dentists. The case of little May, which was mentioned earlier, was one of the more memorable and challenging case that I have faced in my career. May had a bad fall that resulted in a crown fracture of the immature permanent incisor tooth. Her mother insisted to have the tooth removed. After thorough diagnosis, I explained to her that the tooth can be saved via apexification. This was the first time I had performed this procedure; therefore, I had to conduct further research on my own time and constantly consult with endodontists. After many visits, I have successfully treated May. I gained a lot from this experience and was very proud of this accomplishment.

While I was in Nakhon Nayok province, I have also participated in a variety of activities outside of work. I took the leading role in several of Nakhon Nayok Provincial Hospital’s campaigns promoting healthy living for the local community. Additionally, I was a guess healthcare science lecturer for dental hygiene students at the hospital as well. I really enjoyed the experience and genuinely would like to teach more in the future.

After spending about two years working at the Nakhon Nayok Provincial Hospital, I decided to work in my home city Bangkok instead. I have worked as a general practice dentist at three different dental clinics: Smart Smile Dental Clinic, Jendham Dental Company Limited, and Dental Corporation Public Company Limited. At these clinics, I have encountered many wonderful patients and learned from many talented co-workers.
Over the years, I have developed an interest in teaching and researching. In the long run I would like work as both a dental specialist and a lecturer/researcher, which is why I plan to join SWU’s dental school’s research team after completing my postgraduate study. Being a researcher there would let me explore the role of a lecturer and a researcher, ultimately helping me achieve my goal.

Completing a Master’s of Science in Endodontics will provide me with the skills, knowledge, and academic qualification necessary to advance my career and achieve my long-term goal. I possess a strong ambition to become an endodontist and passion for health and science. With these attributes along with my experience, I am confident that I will excel at furthering my studies and go on to become a successful endodontist as well as a researcher/lecturer.
