"Well, through using a smartphone you can download games and it even acts as a GPS."

"Well, through using a smartphone you can download games and it even acts as a GPS."
    1. Can we use "using" in that sentence?

    2. Is the verb "acts" correct?

" The French are famous for their food."
I've found that sentence in an English book as correct. Isn't it correct to omit the definite article?

No, you can't omit the definite article.

I would suggest rewriting it thus: 'Well, with a smartphone you can download games, and it even acts as a GPS.
“Every miserable fool who has nothing at all of which he can be proud, adopts as a last resource pride in the nation to which he belongs; he is ready and happy to defend all its faults and follies tooth and nail, thus reimbursing himself for his own inferiority.”
