    'has' or 'have'?

    Manchester United has/have won...
    Milan has/have won...

    My answer (and you may get differing ones ) is that if you think of Manchester United as a football club then it is a single entity, so the singular has is correct. If you think of United as the players, then the plural have is correct.

    The same situation happens many times, such as the government - is it a thing or the politicians. So you see both - the Government has/have announced.....

    I'd agree with Davy here, for British English, e.g.

    1. Manchester United was founded in 1878.
    2. Manchester United are running out onto the pitch.

    I think though in American English it's more usual to use a singular verb with a team. For instance, I saw this sentence (or something very similar) on a US website earlier this year:

    3. Chelsea is the new champion of the Premier League.

    (which sounded very strange to me).
