    Chimed in

    Dear friends,
What does "chimed in" mean here? I searched the internet but could not find anything meaningful. The context is as follows:

"It is generally so, but not always. Some time ago, there were about twenty-seven patients here; and, of that
number, no less than eighteen were women; but, lately, matters have changed very much, as you see."
"Yes — have changed very much, as you see," here interrupted the gentleman who had broken the shins of
    Ma'mselle Laplace.
"Yes — have changed very much as you see!" chimed in the whole company at once.

I presume it could mean "joined, added, said" something like this.
2015 is the 100th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide - the first genocide of the 20th century.

Yes. It's a musical metaphor, like joining a "chorus" of voices.
I'm not a teacher. I speak American English. I've tutored writing at the University of Southern Maine and have done a good deal of copy editing and writing, occasionally for publication.
