    Question Matters? Affairs?

Could yoou have a look at this sentence, please? I am not sure the pasted word is appropriate here.
Now when we have grown up, my brother and I are more independent and we have our own friends and matters [things to deal with] beyond our family orbit.
    Looking forward to your suggestions.
    Tnx

Matters is ok, but in the context maybe affairs is better - and more common. You could also use interests or responsibilities.
