The chemicals can be poisonous if ingested.

Hello, I can't get my head around this dictionary example. Would you help me, please?

"The chemicals can be poisonous if ingested."

Does it mean that I will certainly become sick if I swallow these chemicals, or that I may or may not get ill if I do so? Or something else?

    Thank you.

Without further context, I would understand that to mean that the chemicals are not poisonous unless ingested, and if they are ingested, they may or may not poison you.

They might only be poisonous to some people.
