    Electrical engineering is one of the newer branches of engineering.

    Is the following sentence correct? Shouldn't it be "the newest"?

    Electrical engineering is one of the newer branches of engineering.

    Firstly, you're right that newest is correct.

    But it's natural to use newer like this. It helps suggest that although it is one of the 'newest' branches, it is not exactly 'new', (it dates back to the late 19th century) and that there are much older branches of engineering.
