    nods and hems

In Joyce's Dubliners, the expression "demure nods and hems" is used when, Maria, in the short story "Clay" is talking to a stranger in the tram.

What does "hem" means? I could not find it in the dictionary. (Or anything more helpful than "The border or edge of a piece of cloth")

    thank you!
