I knew Count Basie was talking about the experience the first time he met Art Tatum but obviously what I cannot figure out is the most interesting part because the audience laughed loudly.

Thanks very much for your reply. It's a bit frustrated when I knew all these words but couldn't recognize them by ear.:-(

Regarding the last sentence, does "a half a chord" here mean "some chords" or "some notes"? I'm not sure how a chord can be half.

And I'm wondering if the sound of other parts is clear enough? I'm not confident to tell the reason I cannot figure out is the sound quality or my listening skill.

The use of just a half a chord or something is meant to show that he only played for a very short time, not that he played literally half a chord. It seems that Art's intention was nothing more than just to get Count Basie off his piano.
