Question the wolf is at the door

Where did the phrase "the wolf is at the door" come from? My understanding is that is means that you've fallen on hard times, such that you're starving and the wolf has come to eat you. I've looked all over the web and have found this phrase used often but not explained anywhere. Thank you for your help.
    K.
