    One-word and Phrasal Verbs

    Hi teachers!

Is there a difference between one-word and phrasal verbs?

EX: To turn down and to refuse; She turned his invitation down. She refused his invitation.

Is either used more common in spoken or written English or in AmE or BrE or formal?

Also, the above question refers to transitive phrasal verbs.

Ex: She tore the letter up.
Ex: She tore up the letter.
Ex: She tore up all the letters he had sent her.
Ex: She tore all the letters up he had sent her.

Native speakers' (both AmE and BrE) help is greatly appreciated!

    Thank you!

Phrasal verbs are the stuff of everyday language, Retro. We use so many, it astounds ESLs when they finally get a chance to operate in an English speaking country. That's not to say that one word verbs are never used in speech for they are, but phrasals are the bread and butter of daily language.
