For many politicians, celebrities and the media

    Have I made any mistakes?

For many politicians, celebrities and the media, the 75th D-Day commemoration is an opportunity to put on a show of patriotism, but for Sarah, whose grandfather had participated in the landing and had been wounded, it is a day of sorrow. Her grandfather never talked about what he had gone through, but he returned a broken man who took to drink and eventually drank himself to death.

    * Just to avoid repetition of "drink"/"drank", consider using "alcohol" or "the bottle" instead of "drink" in that.

What's wrong with "had been wounded"?

(I would say "was wounded" but I have no problem with "had been wounded".)
