    have you seen....is/was

    Hi,

Let's say that my mother-in-law comes to my house telling me that her daughter is so upset because we have been separated. She is staying somewhere else but I don't know where she is.

    Her mother says:

Have you seen where she is living?
Have you seen where she was living?

Which one is more appropriate to use - is or was? I feel confused because of the present perfect.

    Thanks.

If she is still living in that place, use "is"; otherwise, use "was".
However, those sentences imply that the speaker is concerned about the living conditions of the person. They imply that your mother-in-law knows where her daughter is living and she is chiding you about the bad state of the place. Is that the meaning you intended?

Yes, that is what I want to mean. And thanks for the answer.
