Being from a less privileged background

    Have I made any mistakes?

Being from a less privileged background, Tom didn't feel comfortable in the company of students from rich families. While they were spending like there was no tomorrow, he had to think twice before buying something. He knew how hard his parents had worked to be able to send him to university.

The past continuous is wrong. In fact, its combination with the past simple makes the latter seem like an action interrupting it. Use the past simple instead of the past continuous. I would also use the word "money" with it. Also, had the parents stopped working?

Would this version be OK? Tom's parents hadn't stopped working.

Re: Being from a less privileged background

If you write less privileged you should say what you're comparing his background to. You should use the compound adjective less-privileged if you mean "not very privileged".
    I am not a teacher.

I'm wondering if less-privileged is equivalent to of limited means.
I am neither a teacher nor a native English speaker
