    advertisement

Mrs. Brown: Oh, my dear, I have lost my precious little dog!
Mrs. Smith: But you must put an advertisement in the papers!
Mrs. Brown: It's no use, my little dog can't read.

    (from the Internet)

I wonder if the use of Ďadvertisementí is correct. Iíve always thought the advertisement is used for selling something.

    That's a comma splice.

It seems to be doing the rounds on non-native English websites.

Not at all. Advertisements can be non-commercial such as government advertisements.
In this case, the type of ad is called a missing person/item/pet ad. In fact, some publications have a dedicated Lost/Found section.
