# Thread: watch is utterly worthless

1. ## watch is utterly worthless

Hi.

My friend told me he bought a watch on an overpass. He also told me the one who sold him this told him that the watch is worth 10,000 yuan. I think he bought it for its fancy look. Then he went to a watch repairing shop and the man who has repaired a thousand watches told him:

The watch is utterly worthless.

Is this sentence natural?

It's okay, but I think "this watch" is more likely than "the watch".

Well, either term works. If Silver is relating what his friend told him, "The" is OK. If his friend is repeating what the "man" said, then "This" would be correct.

Then he went to a watch repair shop, and the man, who has repaired a thousand watches, said;

Did he mean the watch couldn't be repaired?

5. ## Re: watch is utterly worthless

The repairman should have told him which watch he was talking about: the one in his hand. He'd do that by calling it this watch.

No, a man who has seen thousand watches will simply tell you how much a watch is worth.

He won't repair the watch? Isn't it a watch repair shop?

He will. But he will still tell you the watch is worthless.

9. ## Re: watch is utterly worthless

Put it more simply - the watch is not worth repairing.

10. ## Re: watch is utterly worthless

That makes sense, Ted. The cost of the repair would be more than the watch is worth.
