    watch is utterly worthless

    Hi.

My friend told me he bought a watch on an overpass. He also told me the one who sold him this told him that the watch is worth 10,000 yuan. I think he bought it for its fancy look. Then he went to a watch repairing shop and the man who has repaired a thousand watches told him:

    The watch is utterly worthless.

    Is this sentence natural?

It's okay, but I think "this watch" is more likely than "the watch".

Well, either term works. If Silver is relating what his friend told him, "The" is OK. If his friend is repeating what the "man" said, then "This" would be correct.

Right, but which determiner is used depends on context, of course.

I'd say he's more likely to say It's totally worthless, without a need to specify which watch.

    Is "It's utterly worthless" wrong?

No. That's a valid alternative to Jutfrank's proposal.

My mistake. I meant to write utterly instead of totally. Sorry for any confusion.

No, a man who has seen thousand watches will simply tell you how much a watch is worth.

He won't repair the watch? Isn't it a watch repair shop?
