    in service of

Unlike other students, whose discussion was in service of perfunctorily completing their schoolwork, the members of Wuyis group clearly enjoyed their lively debate.

Is "in service of" correctly used here?

    Re: in service of

I think the sentence is not natural.

I would omit the first comma. I would replace was in service of completing to serves to complete.
The first and second parts of the sentence are meant to be compared (unlike) but they do not seem to be related - the first was about homework while the second was about debate.
I am not a teacher or a native speaker.

Where did you see this sentence? Who wrote it?

Ted, please don't be in a hurry to answer questions like this until the source and author have been provided.

I might restore your reply when we have this information; I haven't read it yet.

Apologize. One of my students wrote these sentences. I want my reply back.

You can get a reply, but you can't get one back.

    Re: in service of

    OK

Is there absolutely no context for that sentence?

    Please note my corrections above.
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.
