    When Mark's ship started sinking

    Have I made any mistakes?

When Mark's ship started sinking, he was one of the first to abandon it, unlike the proverbial captain who goes down with it. Later in his defence, he told the court that it was better to be called a coward and spend a few years in prison than to be hailed as brave and lay at the bottom of the sea.

    You have.
    What was Mark laying?

Also, "hailed as brave" is not natural. Consider "... branded a coward ... called a hero". Post below.

    Would this version be OK?

Later, in his defence, he told the court that it was better to be branded a coward and spend a few years in prison than be called a hero and lie at the bottom of the sea.
