saying about a stick-thin person and keeping warm

    Hello,

Suppose there is a stick-thin person, that is, a person who is extremely thin and has very little fat round their hips. There is a saying "How can such a stick-thin person keep warm"? In other words, How can a person feel warm if they are so thin (a bag of bones)? Is this a properly formulated saying in English?

    In what language?
It sounds a bit crude in English.

In English. What is the proper way of expressing the thought in English?

This is bizarre! Why can't a thin person stay warm?

1- They can wear warm/extra clothes.
2- They can turn on the heat.
3- They can put on extra blankets (if in bed).

Re: saying about a stick-thin person and keeping warm

Body mass generates and stores heat. Fat insulates somewhat, although it's the muscles which actually generate heat. All other factors being equal, someone with a higher BMI (body mass index) will produce and retain more heat than someone with less.

I gather that's what the OP is referring to - the common assumption that smaller people get cold easier. That's not always true of course, but it's one of those common beliefs rooted in science.

As to the original question, perhaps something like "How does someone so *slight/skinny/tiny/small manage to stay warm enough?"

*Choose the best adjective for the situation.

Edit: Option #2 - "How does someone your size keep warm?"

If it were someone close whom I could tease, I might phrase it something like "How does a beanpole like you keep from freezing (your *butt off)?"

    *Insert choice body part here
