At the reception for the new UK ambassador

    Have I made any mistakes?

At the reception for the new UK ambassador to the US, the mood was congenial and the guests were exchanging smiles and greetings, but the incident with the previous ambassador still felt in the air. People seemed to be asking themselves how long the new one would stay at his post before feeling back to London under the pressure from the President.

Incidents aren't sentient and can't have feelings. Speaking of which, a word is misspelled in the second sentence.

The misspelled word is "fleeing." "...before fleeing back to London..."

    Would this version be OK?

At the reception for the new UK ambassador to the US, the mood was congenial and the guests were exchanging smiles and greetings, but the aftertaste of the incident with the previous ambassador still hung in the air.

It might be a bit overoptimistic.
