    Clive bought a banana box

    Have I made any mistakes?

Clive bought a banana box full of books, without looking though it properly, at a tabletop sale. Later, when he was checking the books carefully, he couldn't believe his luck when he saw the first edition of Harry Potter, worth thousands of pounds.

The word thoroughly would work better than properly for me.
