the structure of the built world

    Hello,
“And so, finally, this: A third gift of darkness is amore intimate connection with the natural world. When light falls away and darkness comes on, when killdeer fall silent and the hedgerows begin to breathe, when stars blink on, only Arcturus and Aldebaran at first, then the whole wash of the Milky Way, when the wind stills as the moon rises; then the structure of the built world begins to vanish.”

From From Let There Be Night: Testimony on Behalf of theDark by Paul Bogard

How can I interpret the part in bold? Does "the built world" refer to the buildings? "Structure" means the ways things are built. How can "the structure" vanish?

I am a fleeting visitor on this fragile Earth.

Re: the structure of the built world

I would take it to mean that once it's completely dark and the stars are out, the world that humans have created (the built world) becomes invisible. The shape of it (the structure) disappears into the darkness.
