    Capitalization of titles

Hi everyone, a question which is probably very basic, but I would like to know the rule: if I use a person's title within a text (i.e. not for appellation), should that title be capitalized? (E.g., the word 'bishop' in the sentence: "the lady asked Bishop Parker to attend the charity event".) Thank you!

    Re: Capitalization of titles

Capitalize titles when they're part of a name, as in your example. The Catholic Church has many bishops, including Bishop Parker.

Does this mean that when subsequently referring to "the bishop", his title should always be capitalized, as it is a kind of metonymy? Thanks!

Yes, when it's a shorter way to name him.
