I hate for people to feel sad

    Hi
What does "I hate for people to feel sad" mean? Does it mean "I hate people who feel sad" or "I don't like people to be say"?

Sorry Rover, I forgot to write the source. It's a sentence in Swan's Practical English Usage. It is explaining for-structure after verbs.

Re: I hate for people to feel sad

In BrE, "I hate for people to feel sad" is unnatural. We would say something like "I hate seeing people sad" or "I hate it when people are sad".
Remember - if you don't use correct capitalisation, punctuation and spacing, anything you write will be incorrect.

It might not be the best way to express the idea but I'd say it's quite natural in British English.
